Environmental Reporting

We minimise our environmental impacts by operating in accordance with relevant legislation and the licence conditions of its facilities. We undertake environmental monitoring and auditing as part of this program.

Environmental Management Plans

We have documented Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) to manage environmental impacts at each of our nominated facilities, and to ensure we operate in compliance with the licence conditions applicable at each site. The EMPs detail the facilities, operations, and environmental conditions at each site. They also detail the emissions applicable to each site, and guide employees on the ways in which these are to be managed.

Guidelines on environmental goals and principles; management strategies; pollution control activities; performance indicators and targets; and reporting and review procedures are given for water, odour, dust, litter, noise, and waste.

The same set of guidelines is also given for emergency preparedness; transfer vehicle management; and noxious pest, weed and vermin control where appropriate.

In addition, our EMPs provide guidelines on:

  • Monitoring at facilities which is required to maintain compliance with the facility’s licence conditions;
  • Reporting, staffing and training requirements; and
  • Environmental auditing and review.

The EMPs also refer employees to relevant sections of our Environment, Quality and Safety (EQ&S) Management System for more detailed guidance on environmental management and monitoring procedures, where appropriate.

Some of our site EMPs are available through the resources section of this website.

Environmental Monitoring Program

Various internal audits are undertaken which cover all licence and DA compliance-related issues including Environment. Internal audits are carried out by operational staff and Environment and Workforce Safety Officers, and include daily and weekly reporting checklists, Environmental Compliance Audits and a Management System Audit. Monitoring parameters include odour, litter, dust, noise, stormwater, trade waste, pests and noxious weeds.

Weekly reports are submitted internally for review.  Monthly safety, environment and quality management meetings are also held at each site to manage operational activities and review performance.  These meetings involve all site operators as well as Environment and Workforce Safety Officers and Site Managers.

We also engage independent auditors to carry out annual audits of site operations, and reviews of its EQ&S Management System.

Follow-up is conducted for all of these processes to ensure information reported is acted on, and any issues are resolved quickly.

Energy Efficiency

In 2009, we triggered an energy use threshold that requires the business to participate in the Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) ProgramWe are required to undertake energy assessments of its activities to identify energy saving opportunities within a 5-year cycle.

In 2011, Our Hampton Park Resource Recovery Precinct in Victoria was selected to participate in the first year of assessments. Energy use associated with site activities was assessed with the assistance of external consultants.

Pollution Incident Response Notification (NSW)

In accordance with Section 5.7A of the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, we have prepared Pollution Incident Response Management Plans (PIRMPs) for all our NSW sites holding relevant EPA licences.

The purpose of the PIRMPs is to prevent and minimise the risk of a pollution incident occurring on our sites and to ensure the timely notification to all relevant persons in the event of a pollution incident occurrence.

Notification to all relevant persons will be undertaken in accordance with the site PIRMP. Details of our notification procedures are outlined in the PIRMP document below.
