Western Australian Landfill Services (WALS), a joint venture between SITA Environmental Solutions and Pioneer, own and operate the Shale Road (South Cardup) Landfill in the south of Perth. The Shale Road Landfill is licenced to accept Class II waste which includes most municipal, commercial and industrial solid waste. The site, which started operations in 1999, is managed to the highest environmental, health and safety standards.
The landfill generates greenhouse gas abatement credits through our landfill gas operator LMS (Landfill Management Services). The gas is captured, burnt to generate electricity which is then sent into the Western Australia electricity grid. The plant generates 3.3 MW of power. That facility has been in operation since 2005.
The Shale Road site was one of the first facilities in the world to sell carbon credits. Some of the environmental benefits from extraction and combustion of landfill gas include: • Greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 115,000 tonnes per annum Co2-e • 21,900 litres less leachate produced • gas diverted for use in generating electricity This translates to: * the removal of 31,500 cars per year for one year * a reduction of 355,000 barrels of oils per year* equivalent plantation of 13,000 hectares of trees per year
Furthermore, waste is stored in specially constructed ‘cells’ that comprise a 600mm thick layer of compacted clay and a specially manufactured 2mm high-density plastic membrane. This double-liner system is a proven, durable method for protecting the environment by preventing water or any other material reaching the surrounding soil or groundwater. Buffer zones also ensure minimal intrusion on neighbours.Stringent facility management procedures ensure the site meets, and where possible exceeds, legislative environmental, health and safety requirements. These procedures provide for:
