SITA's Landfill Activities in Victoria

In Victoria, SITA owns and operates two landfills.  There is a site at Hallam Road (HRL) in Hampton Park and at Taylors Road (TRL) in Dandenong South.  These sites provide responsible environmental management of waste that cannot yet be reused or recycled, from households, business and industry in the eastern and south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne. In a typical year approximately 480,000 tonnes of general waste is received across the two landfills.  TRL also receives Prescribed Industrial Waste (PIW).

Hallam Road Landfill Operations

The Hallam Road site is located approximately 30km south east of Melbourne, Victoria. The site receives general waste, which is predominately made up of:

  • municipal (household) waste;
  • commercial and industrial waste;
  • construction and demolition materials; and
  • public waste disposal for resource recovery and recycling.

    Environmental Monitoring

    To ensure the landfill operations have no impact on the surrounding environment, the site has installed a series of monitoring systems. These systems are regularly monitored by both internally and externally.  The systems are assessed annually by a third party environmental auditor.

    Currently the Hallam Road Landfill site deploys:

    * 14 ground water monitoring bores
    * 14 gas monitoring bores
    * 5 leachate sumps
    Tree planting

    DID YOU KNOW?

  • The Hallam Road Landfill site has Environmental Management ISO 14001 and Occupational Health & Safety AS 4801 certifications.

  • The Hallam Road landfill site is a producer of electricity for the local region.  The onsite gas capture system, which translates gas into energy, has the capacity to generate 3.3 MWh of power (which is enough energy to power over 3,000 homes).  This energy is then pumped back into the electricity grid to provide power to local homes and businesses.
