SITA wins Innovation Award

31/10/2014

SITA has received top honours at the French-Australian Chamber of Commerce 2014 Business Awards.

The awards, held on 16 October, focused on innovation with the French-Australian business community with companies asked to showcase their achievements from the previous year.

SITA won the Patron Member category highlighting the work of its subsidiaries, SITA Australia and Degremont.

Emmanuel Vivant, Executive Director of Infrastructure for SITA Australia, accepted the award on behalf of SITA.

“Innovation is extremely important to the SITA group. We live in a world where raw materials are becoming increasingly scarce and more expensive.  Our company is in the business of meeting this global resources challenge but we cannot meet this challenge without innovation,” Mr Vivant said.

“At SITA, we work across both water and waste sectors. Our clients expect us to develop original and efficient solutions to solve their own resources challenges and this award recognises some of those projects we are delivering.”

Mr Vivant said the award specifically recognised SITA’s new de-packaging unit which is helping some of Australia’s largest food manufacturers and retailers achieve their sustainability goals.

“SITA’s de-packaging unit is the first of its kind in Australia and helps to recover organic resources and divert them from landfill,” he said.

Located at SITA’s Camellia Resource Recovery and Treatment Facility in Western Sydney, the unit separates packaging from the contents of consumer products that can no longer be sold such as pasta meals, sauce bottles, powdered baby formula, coffee products, tea bags and pet food.

“Through this newly installed resource recovery solution, products such as plastic coffee capsules, which previously would have been sent directly to landfill, are processed to allow the packaging to be recycled while the actual coffee is transformed into nutrient-rich compost.”

The award also recognised the innovations delivered by Degrémont, which operates a number of state-of-the-art water and wastewater facilities serving communities throughout Australia.

In New South Wales, Degrémont has delivered the world’s first industrial wastewater membrane filtration system called SMARTRACK. In the Northern Territory, the company is also delivering another Australian first, with the country’s first biological water filtration plant that removes iron and manganese.

“In the rural township of Adelaide River in the Northern Territory, the town’s water supply is discoloured and has quite an unpleasant taste due to the high mineral concentration in their bores.

“SITA’s plant will address this with no chemical use and deliver improved drinking water for the 300 residents,” Mr Vivant said.

“Finding smart and reliable solutions to help our customers achieve their sustainability goals is at the heart of what we do, so we are incredibly proud to be formally acknowledged with this prestigious award.”
