SITA wants community involvement

10/07/2012

Community groups, neighbours and individuals in the vicinity of the Taylors Road Landfill (TRL) in Lyndhurst, Victoria are encouraged to participate in a new Community Reference Group (CRG) initiative.

SITA is seeking 18 community members representing residents and local businesses who will be responsible for expressing the views of the neighbourhood and assist SITA communicate information to the wider community.

Resource recovery services specialist, SITA, is continuing its industry leadership through its commitment to local neighbourhoods.

Community groups, neighbours and individuals in the vicinity of the Taylors Road Landfill (TRL) in Lyndhurst are encouraged to participate in a new Community Reference Group (CRG) initiative.

SITA is seeking 18 community members representing residents and local businesses who will be responsible for expressing the views of the neighbourhood and assist SITA communicate information to the wider community.

For the past four years, eight community members, together with a wide range of representatives of local council, EPA and government departments have met regularly as part of the TRL Community Engagement Steering Committee, to discuss and review operational and management processes at the TRL facility.

During this time, the group contributed to, and provided comment on, SITA’s applications to EPA and the Department of Planning to establish the TRL Soil Processing Facility, a highly-regulated facility for the treatment of contaminated soils that would otherwise go to landfill, actively helping to preserve the environment.

“The group may not have agreed with us on all elements of the soil processing facility proposal,” said State General Manager, Daniel Fyfe.

“But their input was always considered and, in some cases, their viewpoints contributed to the approvals ultimately provided by State Government.”

“SITA wants to maintain, and improve, the interaction with its neighbours in a consultative forum,” he continued.

“We encourage the community to continue to provide input on a wide range of resource recovery, sustainability and corporate citizenship topics.”

SITA will launch the Taylors Road Landfill CRG initiative at a Community Information Meeting to be held at the Lynbrook Primary School at 6:30pm on Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Community members will be able to obtain information on the proposed CRG including an Information Pack and Expression of Interest form to apply for membership of the CRG.

Membership of the TRL CRG will be based on principles of cross-sectional representation to ensure the full spectrum of neighbourhood concerns and interests are included, and balanced from social, environmental and economic perspectives.

The Community Information Meeting also provides the opportunity for SITA to acknowledge and thank the contributions of those community members who have represented the local community for the past four years.

“The value of community engagement is recognised as an integral component of SITA’s activities, and we consider our neighbours to be key partners in our operations,” said Mr Fyfe.

“We welcome anyone who wishes to visit the Taylors Road Landfill facility and view our operations.”
