SITA announces new team of neighbourhood champions

27/08/2012

Advanced resource recovery specialist, SITA today announced the successful applicants for membership of the new Taylors Road Landfill Community Reference Group (TRL CRG).

Replacing the original TRL Community Engagement Steering Committee that began in 2008, the revitalised CRG will continue the valuable work carried out by the original committee.

The primary function of the TRL CRG is to provide community input and comment on a wide range of SITA resource recovery, sustainability and corporate citizenship topics and disseminate the information shared and discussed at the meetings with their communities.

Daniel Fyfe, SITA’s Victorian State General Manager said, “Participation in the CRG is an opportunity for community members to engage directly with SITA regarding any issues of concern related to the Taylors Road Landfill and, most importantly, an opportunity to foster understanding and cooperation between community members and SITA staff.”

“Members of the TRL CRG will actively facilitate community awareness of the operation and environmental performance of the site, and assist in ensuring that operational management and planning at landfill is developed with consideration for the needs and aspirations of the local community.”

The seven members of the TRL CRG, led by an independent Chairperson, include local residents and community organisation representatives.

SITA sincerely welcomes the new members of the TRL CRG:

  • Hon Ron Bowden JP FAICD Chairman
  • Mr Andre D’Cruz  Resident, Lynbrook
  • Mr Michael Ihle  Resident, Lynbrook
  • Mr Tony O’Hara  Representative, Hampton Park Progress Association
  • Mr Paul Richardson  Casey Community Watchdog
  • Ms Sussy Vasquez-Lozano Resident, Hampton Park
  • Ms Thelma Wakelam  Representative, RATWISE
  • Mr Jason Wood  Representative, Lynbrook Residents’ Association

“SITA recognises that significant contributions can be achieved through the ongoing involvement of the community and we are pleased that these community members have each committed their time and energy to the group,” said Mr Fyfe.

“Membership to the CRG is still open, as we are seeking 18 community representatives.  SITA believes that a greater cross-representation of the community will deliver stronger and more positive communication outcomes.”

The first meeting of the TRL CRG will take place on Wednesday, August 29 at SITA’s Taylors Road Landfill.

SITA’s Taylors Road Landfill is the only site in Victoria licenced to receive Prescribed Industrial Waste.  The site will also soon be home to a Soil Processing Facility for the treatment of contaminated soils that would otherwise go to landfill, actively helping to preserve the environment.
