Mackay Surf Life Saving Club helping to keep Harbour Beach Clean

Mackay Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) ‘Keep Harbour Beach Clean’ project received a boost this week and purchased a new beach cleaner with the help of a $5000 grant provided through SITA’s Community Grant Program.

Waste management and recycling company SITA, alongside the State Member for Mackay, the Hon Timothy Mulherin, Mackay Regional Council councillors and SLSC representatives welcomed the start of the surf lifesaving season and launched the project on Saturday.

Peter Ridland, Mackay SLSC Past President, said funding from SITA enabled the SLSC to purchase the first beach cleaner for Mackay as part of the ‘Keep Harbour Beach Clean’ project.

“The beach cleaner will be a regular feature on Harbour Beach. Our aim is to reduce rubbish and provide a cleaner and safe environment for the 100,000 residents and tourists who visit each year,” said Mr Ridland.

SITA QLD State General Manager Peter Hudson said the company was honoured to support the project as part of the SITA Community Grants Program.

“Through the SITA Community Grant Program we are looking to support community groups that make real, positive change in their local communities,” said Mr Hudson.

“The beach cleaner will help Mackay SLSC keep Harbour Beach clean and reduce the risk of injury from waste to the clubs 304 volunteers and members that patrol the beach for more than 400 hours each year,” added Mr Hudson.

To open the new season and launch of the “Keep Harbour Beach Clean” project, a ceremony was held with the local community in attendance to learn more about the project over a barbeque breakfast.

SITA is proud to support the communities in which it operates through the first community grant program for the waste and recycling industry in Australia. For more information, visit our SITA Community Grants website.
