First time Briars Market kicks off

20/10/2015
The Briars Market is in full swing, following their success in the 2015 SUEZ Community Grants Program
The Briars Market is in full swing, following their success in the 2015 SUEZ Community Grants Program.

The market received a $5,000 grant from SUEZ to assist with launching the Tuesday afternoon weekly market. The grant has enabled the market to develop education materials and educate attendees about sustainable growing methods and healthy food.

Local shoppers will be provided with the confidence that the person they are purchasing the produce from either grew it, harvested it or made it within 40km of the Briars. The markets have a zero waste focus and encourage shoppers to go plastic bag free. There’s also the option for stall holders to donate produce to Second Bite at the end of each market.

Kelvin Sargent, SUEZ State Manager of Victoria, presented the cheque to the Briars Market at its official opening on Tuesday afternoon and said SUEZ was proud to support this local community group.

“The Briars Market will provide this local community with greater opportunity for local families to enjoy a variety of quality food and an option to purchase it as a part of their weekly shopping routine.”

President of the Briars Market Rachael Koch was excited to receive the news about the grant.

“The Briars Market will connect hundreds of individuals with local farmers and food producers and with the help of the SUEZ Community Grant our market will be running exciting programs much more quickly.”

SUEZ launched the company’s community grants program in 2013 and to date has provided more than $250,000 in funding across Australia.
