2,000 free trees for National Tree Day 2012

06/07/2012

In the lead up to National Tree Day in July, SITA is giving away 2,000 native plants to interested groups that have registered a site for National Tree Day.

Schools, councils, environmental and community groups in the locality of our Lucas Heights Resource Recovery Park are able to collect up to two hundred free native seedling trees and shrubs.

Are you looking to rejuvenate your local environment this National Tree Day?  Have you, or would you like to, organise a tree planting day but need some native plants and seedlings?

Look no further!

All plants have been propagated at SITA’s Lucas Heights Native Seedling Nursery, which was originally established to produce native plants for the rehabilitation of the New Illawarra Road landfill at the Lucas Heights Resource Recovery Park.

The Menai Wildflower Group has registered a National Tree Day planting site at Albert Delardes Reserve, Illawong and is taking full advantage of the free plant offer.

Lloyd Hedges, Lucas Heights Nursery Supervisor and Vice President of the Menai Wildflower Group, is excited that SITA has donated 200 plants to their National Tree Day activity.

“The Lucas Heights nursery is manned entirely by volunteers and specialises in Sydney trees and shrubs grown from seed collected locally.”

“Together with SITA, the nursery volunteers are looking forward to helping out local groups, including ours, and schools with native plants that will help rejuvenate our environment.”

In 2011, the nursery produced over 10,000 seedlings and plants to the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service and local environmental groups for conservation efforts, as well as the rehabilitation of the landfill site.

This year, National Tree Day will be held on Sunday, July 29 and Schools Tree Day on Friday, July 27.

Please contact Lloyd Hedges, Nursery Supervisor on 0406 901 631 for collection advice and further information.

SITA’s plants and shrubs seedlings are also available for schools, scouts and other local community groups that holding planting days throughout the year.
