Stages 1 to 3 – 45 to 60 minutes
This interactive unit explores the what, why
and where of household waste through
hands-on problem-solving activities and
discussions that will explore and expand
students understanding by investigating:
• What goes in each bin – the good, the bad
and the ugly (and it’s mostly ugly);
• What next? Where it all goes and what
happens to it;
• Waste and the World– the impacts on the
environment if waste isn’t managed
Stage 3 only – 90 minutes

classify waste, weigh and record results,
report on their findings and develop strategies
for reducing the overall amount of waste
produced in the school, as well as improving
recycling and composting rates!
