A transfer station is a building or processing site used for the temporary deposition of waste by collection vehicles. Prior to being loaded into larger vehicles the material is often sorted, with valuable resources removed for recycling.
The larger vehicles transport the material to MRFs or ARRTs for further processing, or deliver the material to a landfill for final disposal.
In the future, SITA transfer stations will be well-equipped with material recovery facilities or other such resource recovery processes to remove recyclable items from the waste stream.
SITA currently has 13 transfer stations. To find out where they are located visit our Facilities Map.
