SITA-ResourceCo Alternative Fuels

Dry materials such as mixed plastics, timbers and textiles are a recoverable resource with a high level of embedded energy that can be used in the production of alternative fuel.

Through our SITA-ResourceCo ARRT facility, these dry items are turned into alternative fuels for use in existing power stations or cement kilns.  The feedstock materials are sourced from construction activities, refurbishments and site fit-outs, manufacturing facilities and other pre-sorted waste streams.

At our SITA-ResourceCo facility in Wingfield, South Australia we process approximately 150,000 tonnes of raw material annually. This material is converted to around 85,000 tonnes of processed engineered fuel (PEF). The facility has the capability to manufacture up to 350,000 tonnes of raw material per annum into approximately 100,000 to 150,000 tonnes of PEF. 

Benefits of PEF


PEF has significant calorific value and can be used as a fuel substitute for coal and gas in high-combustion facilities.  The carbon and renewable energy benefits include:

  • reduced use of fossil fuel
  • reduction in landfill emissions
  • renewable energy certificates can be secured

Our Wingfield site is the first and only one of its kind in Australia. SITA is planning to roll-out the SITA-ResourceCo model nationally, as it has the potential to signifciantly improve resource recovery from mixed solid waste as well as commercial & industrial and construction & demolitian wastes.
