A Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) is like a giant factory where the recyclable materials that are collected from homes and businesses are taken to be sorted into different types or “streams” such as paper, plastics glass and aluminium.
Depending on their configuration, MRFs can accept either fully co-mingled recyclables (when all recyclable items are placed in the one recycling bin before collection) or source separated recyclables (when the household separates their paper and cardboard from their containers).
Some of the sorting is done by machines and some is done by hand.
After they have been separated into different streams, the materials are transported to manufacturers where they are reprocessed into recycled products such as glass containers, aluminium cans, paper, cardboard, plastic packaging and steel products.
SITA is continually introducing new services and technologies that transform waste into valuable resources. We currently have three MRFs. To find where they are located visit our Facilities Map.
