What's on site at Raymond Terrace Resource Recovery Centre

Raymond Terrace ARRT Facility

Port Stephens Council was the first council in New South Wales to adopt an advanced resource recovery process to process its domestic mixed solid waste (MSW), issuing a 20 year contract in 1998.

SUEZ’s Raymond Terrace ARRT Facility in New South Wales, processes up to 40,000 tonnes of residential mixed solid waste each year.

Waste to the facility is supplied by Port Stephens Council under a 20 year contract which commenced in 1998. Port Stephens Council, motivated by diminishing landfill capacity in the region and the desire to manage the region’s waste in a more environmentally sustainable manner, was the first council in New South Wales to adopt an advanced resource recovery process to process its domestic waste.

This facility uses identical technology to that used in our Cairns ARRT Facility in Northern Queensland.  Two 60 metre-long drum composters, followed by refining equipment, are used to separate the organic component from the non-organic material in the MSW.  This is composted, further refined, producing high quality soil conditioners for use in landscaping, land rehabilitation, turf growing and broadacre agriculture.

As the first council in New South Wales to adopt an advanced resource recovery process for its domestic waste, Port Stephens Council has achieved an ongoing high-level diversion of recyclable materials from landfill.  The desire to manage the region's waste in a more environmentally sustainable manner has seen the facility deliver a number of benefits to the region including:

  • Approximately 50% of the region's domestic and commercial waste diverted from landfill;
  • The recovery of steel, which is sold into the recycling industry, reducing the use of energy and virgin materials to product new steel;
  • The facility's composted organic products are used locally, closign the loop on organics in the region by returning organic material and nutrients to the soil it orginated from; and
  • Waste rejected from the process is largely inorganic, so apart from breaking down physically over many years, it produces fewer environmental issues that the disposal of organic material.  Organic waste disposed of directly to landfill creates two major by-products; methane, a greenhouse gas with 25 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide; and leachate, or contaminated water, that must be managed during the life of the landfill and for many years beyond.  Processing of the waste using ARRT technology avoids these issues by removing the organic component before it is landfilled.

Guided tours of the Raymond Terrace ARRT Facility can be arranged by contacting the Port Stephens Council Waste Services Department.
