SITA owns and operates Australia’s most highly solid waste engineered landfills.
We recognise that landfill plays an important and necessary part in managing Australia's waste disposal. Even new technologies generate a proportion of residual waste stream which must be disposed of.
Secure, engineered facilities are the community’s best environmental management option for those wastes that can’t yet be recycled or reused.
Using the latest technology and drawing on our international experience, our landfill operations are carefully designed to minimise the amount of space used. They maximise the operational lifetime of the landfill and limit the environmental and social impacts of landfilling.
Our landfill facility designs include a variety of environmental protection measures including strict waste acceptance and handling procedures, base liner systems, treatment of liquid by-products from waste (leachate), collection and use of landfill gas, groundwater and surface water management, and detailed environmental monitoring and reporting. These measures meet or exceed requirements set out in the landfills’ operating licences issued by EPA.
Biogas produced as waste breaks down is captured and used to generate green electricity that is fed into the power grid.
