The devices undergo a treatment process approved by the NSW Health Department and do not come into cross-contamination with any other hospital or non-hospital waste. The metals and plastics collected from the devices are processed to create valuable products such as sheet metal and granulated plastic. The reprocessed products will be completely unrecognisable from the original hospital surgical device waste.
Healthcare for the Environment is an initiative of SUEZ to improve environmental sustainability practices within the healthcare sector. It enables hospitals to:
Participating hospitals receive a bin clearly labelled Healthcare for the Environment that is placed near the operating theatre for the collection of single-use medical devices.
All medical devices made of medical grade plastic and metal may be placed in the Healthcare for the Environment bin for collection.
SUEZ will collect the bins to treat and recover metal resources. The valuable resources collected from the devices will be processed and used in the manufacture of new products.
All other clinical waste from operating theatres must continue to be collected and disposed of according to existing hospital protocols and regulations by relevant authorities.
