Organic Material

As the leader in sustainable resource recovery, SUEZ believes the future of waste management is based on much greater levels of resource recovery and reuse of organic material for compost production.

SUEZ’s organic recycling collection service helps Australian businesses to reduce their carbon footprint whilst also reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. In 2014, SUEZ recovered 266,000 tonnes of organics.

When organic matter decomposes in landfill it generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Better that organics are use to replenish our soils and gardens via compost and mulch, than to be lost to landfills where they contribute to climate change and global warming.

Organic Material at a Glance

Choosing to separate food and garden organics means that this material can be beneficially reused by composting it. Our organic solutions have the flexibility to handle a great variety of inputs, and are designed to produce a range of nutrient-rich composted products.

Collection Systems

Organics are collected in the following systems* which can be adapted to suit your site.

  • Rear Lift System
  • Front Lift System
  • Bulk: Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO)

What happens after we've collected your Organic Material?

Organics collected is sent to either Organic Resource Recovery Facility (ORRF) or Advanced Resource Recovery Facility (ARRT)  for processing; once here the material begins its process to be converted into compost, soil conditioner and mulch products.

Composting uses an aerobic process that depends on the work of micro organisms decomposing organic materials and is assisted with the use of biosolids and grease traps waste. During composting the heat generated from microbial behaviour produces a perfect growing environment for beneficial bacteria and fungi which releases large amounts of energy and heat to temperatures between 60°C and 70°C; this process eliminates weed seeds and pathogens in the organic material. Windrows are watered to maintain temperature and regularly turned to reduce odour emissions. The composting process is monitored under highly controlled conditions and is only complete once the cooling and maturation stages are fulfilled.
