NSW Waste Acceptance & Charges Brochure

Your guide to recycling charges, opening hours and waste acceptance criteria at our NSW Resource Recovery sites.

General Waste Management

As waste levies rise and commitment to environmental sustainability grows, councils and commercial enterprises are increasingly investigating ways in which they can reduce disposal costs and integrate environmentally sustainable waste management plans.

SITA aims to maximise the volume of waste that is sent for recycling and resource recovery. However, we understand that sometimes there is waste that cannot be recovered and we can provide a solution to assist. SITA can treat and dispose of general waste - also known as residual or wet waste - for council, commercial and residential customers.

General Waste Management at a Glance

We assess your needs to determine the right service type, container size and collection frequency for your site. SITA's Territory Managers are trained and competent to complete a full safety and risk analysis of the collection service selected for your site which is signed off by you and the Territory Manager prior to service commencement. This process ensures that we understand your site requirement and that the risk of injury or damage to property is alleviated when we perform services.

Collection Systems

General Waste is collected in the following systems which can be adapted to suit your site:

  • Rear Lift System
  • Front Lift System
  • Bulk: Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO)
  • Compaction System

Please refer to our collection services brochure below for more information.

Fleet Technology

SITA uses SWIFT (SITA Working Intelligence For Trucks) and RAPID (Route And Productivity Information Delivery) technologies in its vehicle fleet to monitor collected weights, identify bins with their corresponding address and confirm GPS time, date and vehicle ID of service. These technologies provide current and relevant information, enabling our customers to closely monitor costs and also identify new opportunities for recycling.

Collection Scheduling

Prior to service start, SITA will determine with you a suitable collection schedule covering all collections to prevent disruption to your operation.

Equipment

All equipment installed, supplied and maintained at our customer sites complies with the requirements of relevant Workplace Health and Safety legislation. We carry out full preventative maintenance inspections on all specialised equipment such as compactors based on customer sites. A preventative maintenance schedule and operation training is provided with all specialised equipment installed on our customer sites.

Equipment Delivery

Containers will be delivered by a crane vehicle commonly know as HIAB. This vehicle is usually a rigid table top vehicle with a hydraulically operated crane mounted behind the cabin; centre of table top body or on the rear of the body.

This vehicle and equipment is used for the delivery and removal of bins in the front load and rear load systems for new customers, changeovers and service cancellations.

When delivering bins to new customers or additional service sites the crane driver has the responsibility to ensure that bins are placed in a safe and suitable position. The crane driver shall report any potential situations where service difficulties could be encountered during bin service or from local traffic conditions to ensure that notes are placed on the permanent route sheet.

The crane driver is responsible for checking and notifying operations of any potential future risks on customer sites from bin service position. Report any difficult situations such as:

  • reversing onto roadways;
  • mounting gutters and kerbs to reach the bin;
  • dangerous overhead obstructions;
  • electrical wires in close proximity which may present a hazard to other drivers operating in this location in the future; and
  • ensure overhead caution stickers are placed on applicable bins as part of the delivery service.

The clearance directly above the bin being lifted must be checked.  In particular, the driver must pay attention to the proximity of overhead power lines, communication lines, awnings or obstructions that will cause damage to property, the vehicle or potential death to the driver.

What happens after we've collected your General Waste?

General waste received from kerbside or business premise collections, and from deliveries by householders and small businesses at a SITA resource recovery centre, is either processed at one of our Advanced Resource Recovery Technology (ARRT) facilities, which provides high percentage outcomes for resource recovery, or after undergoing some form of resource recovery process, waste that cannot be returned into the circular economy is treated and disposed of under acceptable environmental conditions.  This may include disposal at one of SITA's engineered landfills.
